view of chuch under restoration scaffolding from train station in Venice, ItalyARTIST’S STATEMENTIn this suite of paintings based on sketches from my travel journals, I returned to my first and basic love, drawing.  While my subject matter remains thematically similar to past works of how nature’s effects mark the passage of time, my paint application has changed to numerous thin layers.  Drawing and redrawing, putting on and taking away, the process and change is recorded into a palimpsest.  The paintings retain the immediacy and searching of a sketch on-site, capturing that specific moment.  Because of the quickness of a sketch, the basic essence is recorded; details and color are filled in by memory and imagination.  In these paintings I share my favorite moments from journeys, revealing the intimacy and private experience of a journal.

Vineyard  landscapes from this show are included on the Open Land / Open Space page.
